Could you become a Magnepan dealer?

Every audiophile knows about the decline in "brick and mortar" audio stores. Compared to the 70’s and 80’s, there has been a large increase in high-end products and fewer places to hear them. What is the future? Will we buy everything online with a home-trial option? No, we don't believe 2-channel retail stores will become obsolete. But change is inevitable. Meet Mike Hoatson and his little 2-channel store (The Listening Room) in the Baltimore area.

Mike is 29 years old. Mike believes the younger generations will move beyond headphones and earbuds if they can experience a high-end 2-channel system. And this is a career Mike has chosen because he loves it. To survive, many audio specialty dealers have had to diversify into custom integration. Mike has the technical skills for custom integration, but he is not interested. His passion is 2-channel audio.

We would like to see “Mike Hoatson” dealers in every city including smaller markets that lost their stereo store. Maybe you could become a Magnepan dealer.

The “New” Magnepan Dealer

Change is coming to Magnepan’s dealer network.

The pandemic sped up a process that began in the 1990's as stereo stores diversified into home theater and the custom installation business. Successful audio specialists still sell 2-channel audio but the emphasis is on products you would see thumbing through high-end stereo magazines. John Atkinson, then editor of Stereophile magazine, wrote a thoughtful article "The Upward Price Spiral".

Magnepan is still stuck back in the 1970's and '80's when "Sound Quality" was #1 and “Front Panel Appeal” was often a distant second. As we slowly move beyond the loss of dealers due to the pandemic, it is fertile ground for new, small stereo stores that resemble the stereo stores of the '70's and '80's. The Magnepan dealer in your area may be in the very early stages of starting a new 2-channel business. We know each individual very well and trust them. Can I get a discount on Magneplanars?

It is common practice to post an inflated retail price so that the dealer can offer a "discount". Who do they think they are fooling? Not our customers, because we think our customers have above average intelligence.

When your dealer told you that there is no "fat" in the profit margin of a Magneplanar for a phony discount, he was correct. You could say we are conservative. We offer hand-crafted, American-made products of exceptional value. A phony discount scheme is not consistent with the way we do business.
